چکیده

The present paper is a shortened version of the one presented at the ICMC/SMC2014 [1] where it was demonstrated that SSMN (Spatialization Symbolic Music Notation) research seeks to establish a paradigm wherein OSC (Open Sound Control) [2] and a Rendering Engine allow a musical score to be heard in divers Surround formats. The research team consists of composers, spatialization experts, IT specialists and a graphic designer. After having established a taxonomy identifying and classifying spatiality of sound with associated parameters, open source software is being developed and tested by practitioners in the field. Composers, utilizing dedicated graphic symbols integrated into a score editor, have full control over spatialization characteristics. They can audition the results and communicate their intentions to performers (i.e. conductors, musicians, dancers, actors) as well as to all participants in the chain from rehearsal to performance. SSMN capitalizes on time-based phenomena: choreographers can combine and synchronize sound and body movement; installation artists can program interactively visuals with audio manipulation; film and video can be enhanced with 3D sound effects and spatialized scores. SSMN focuses not only on musical composition, other performing and media arts or even game interaction design, but is useful in academic contexts such as professional training in conservatories and in musicological research addressing the perennity of spatialization in early electroacoustic music.

Spatialization Symbolic Music Notation at ICST

SSMN intends to develop a conceptual framework and a tool set that allows composers to integrate spatialization in musical notation from the onset of the creation process. As the composition takes form and graphic symbols expressing spatialization is introduced into the score, instant audio rendering provides feedback within a surround sound configuration. In parallel, SSMN helps interpreters a...

Spatial Modulation Synthesis

In 1962 Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Concept of Unity in Electronic Music” introduced a connection between the parameters of intensity, duration, pitch, and timbre using an accelerating pulse train. In 1973 John Chowning discovered that complex audio spectra could be synthesized by increasing vibrato rates past 20Hz. In both cases the notion of increased speed to produce timbre was critical to disc...

Representing Music with Visual Space and Color

Ryan McGee MUS 274 | Winter 2010 Introduction Visual space has been accepted as an analog to musical pitch [1]. The most obvious example of this relationship may be reading a musical score. As the positions of the notes move vertically up or down over time, the musician responds by playing pitches of ascending or descending frequency. Now, consider auditory space. In traditional music scores th...

2011 space odyssey: spatialization as a mechanism to code order allows a close encounter between memory expertise and classic immediate memory studies

In 2011 van Dijk and Fias with an innovative working memory paradigm showed for the first time that words to-beremembered, presented sequentially at the center of a screen acquired a new spatial dimension: the first words of the sequence acquired a left spatial value while the last words acquired a right spatial value. In this article, we argue that this spatialization which putatively underpin...

Spatium, Tools for Sound Spatialization

In this paper we present spatium, a set of free, open source and modular software tools for sound spatialization, describing the creative and technical aspects considered during its development. The system is comprised of spatialization renderers, spatialization interfaces, DAW plugins and Max objects that communicate via OSC (Open Sound Control). They aim to: facilitate the exploration of diff...
